The One With the List

Thursday, 16 November 1995

Ross breaks up with Julie for Rachel, but a list of Rachel's flaws that Chandler typed up reaches her, and Rachel refuses to forgive him; Monica takes a job inventing recipes with a synthetic chocolate.

What happens

• Rachel tells Monica and Phoebe about the kiss with Ross, and it clearly went well.
• Ross admits to the others that he feels guilty about Julie and cannot decide between her and Rachel.
• Julie joins the group at the coffee house, and Phoebe performs a song about a man choosing between two women while everyone squirms.
• Monica interviews with Mr. Rastatter, secretly hates the taste of his synthetic chocolate, and takes the job creating Thanksgiving recipes with it anyway.
• Chandler talks Ross into typing a pros-and-cons list on his new computer, and Ross catalogues Rachel's faults while the only mark against Julie is that she is not Rachel.
• Ross ends things with Julie and tells Rachel it was always going to be her.
• Rachel spots her own name on Chandler's screen, refuses the excuses the three men invent, and snatches the printout.
• Rachel reads the faults Ross listed, including his dismissal of her career, and walks out on him.
• Ross climbs the fire escape and reads out the reasons he loves her, but Rachel tells him she would never have made a list at all and shuts him down.
• Mr. Rastatter loses his approval for the synthetic chocolate, pays Monica off, and asks whether eating it has hurt her.
