The One Where Estelle Dies

Thursday, 22 April 2004

Rachel's new job in Paris pushes Ross to bribe her old boss into hiring her back, while Phoebe hides Estelle's death from Joey and Janice threatens to buy the house next to Monica and Chandler's.

What happens

• Rachel explains that the incredible job she has been offered is in Paris, and Ross tells her they will find a way to make it work.
• Joey refuses to accept another change and walks out rather than congratulate Rachel.
• Phoebe reads in the paper that Joey's agent Estelle has died, and she persuades Monica and Chandler to keep it from him for a few days.
• Ross visits Mr Zelner at Ralph Lauren and offers his son a private after-hours tour of the museum if Zelner will give Rachel her job back.
• Phoebe telephones Joey pretending to be Estelle, and Joey fires her during the call.
• Rachel tells Ross that Ralph Lauren has rehired her, but she has used the offer to get more money out of Paris and is still going.
• Monica and Chandler tour the house next door and run into Janice, who decides to buy it precisely because they will be her neighbours.
• Joey hears the answering machine message about Estelle's memorial, and Phoebe calls one last time as Estelle to tell him there are no hard feelings.
• Chandler tells Janice he still loves her and wants an affair, and Janice kisses him goodbye and pulls out of the house.
• Rachel accepts a raise to stay at Ralph Lauren, but Ross realises how much she wanted Paris and tells her to take that job instead.
