The One With All the Jealousy

Thursday, 16 January 1997

Ross's jealousy of Rachel's co-worker Mark pushes him to smother her new office with gifts, while Phoebe convinces Monica that Julio's poem is an insult and Joey's faked dance résumé catches up with him.

What happens

• Mark picks up Rachel's office phone, and Ross presses her until she explains that she and Mark share the office as Joanna's two assistants.
• Joey earns a callback but learns it includes a dance audition, and Chandler discovers that the years of dance training on Joey's résumé are invented.
• Monica brings the friends a poem Julio left behind, and after she goes, Phoebe reads it as an insult and decides Monica is the empty vase of the title.
• Ross buries Rachel's desk in flowers and a musical toy and sends a barbershop quartet to sing about her loyal boyfriend in front of her colleagues.
• Rachel tells Ross the gifts are him marking his territory, and mentions that Mark has been explaining Ross's behaviour to her.
• Ross turns up at the store, sees Mark kissing a woman and shouts at him, then covers by pretending he is an unserved customer shopping for a tie.
• The director's dance captain cannot make it, so he hands Joey the group and tells him to teach the other dancers the combination.
• Monica accuses Julio of calling her empty, and he tells her the poem is about American women in general, which does not comfort her.
• Ross apologises and admits he fears losing Rachel the way he lost Carol, and Rachel tells him that trust leaves no room for jealousy.
• Ross mentions a play date with the stripper from the bachelor party, and Rachel, who has just lectured him, becomes jealous herself.
