The One Where No One Proposes

Thursday, 26 September 2002

Joey kneels to pick up an engagement ring that falls out of Ross's coat, Rachel takes it as a proposal and accepts, and the mistake spreads through the group until the three of them untangle it.

What happens

• Joey knocks a ring box out of Ross's coat and kneels to retrieve it, and Rachel, seeing the ring, treats it as a proposal and agrees.
• Joey admits the mix-up to Chandler, who works out that the ring is Ross's and tells Joey to correct Rachel before Ross hears about it.
• Monica talks a worn-out Chandler into more sex to improve their odds of conceiving, and they slip into a janitor's closet.
• Mr. Geller listens at the closet door and looks inside, and finds his daughter and Chandler there.
• Rachel slides the ring onto her finger and Joey tries to confess, but a nurse arrives to help Rachel feed Emma, who will not latch on, and Joey flees.
• Phoebe congratulates Ross on an engagement he never made, and Ross explains that his mother gave him the ring but he only meant to ask Rachel about dating again.
• Monica tells her father that she and Chandler are trying for a baby, and he responds with encouragement and conception advice they do not want.
• Rachel tells Monica that Joey proposed and that she said yes, then admits under questioning that she does not want to marry him.
• Ross, Rachel and Joey sort out the confusion in her room, establishing that Joey never proposed, that the ring belongs to Ross, and that Ross was not planning to propose either.
• Emma finally nurses, Ross and Rachel agree to talk about their relationship again, and Ross then realises Rachel had said yes to what she thought was Joey's proposal.
