The One With Phoebe's Birthday Dinner

Thursday, 31 October 2002

Chandler starts smoking again in Tulsa and Monica tricks him into sex while she is ovulating, Ross and Rachel lock themselves out of the apartment, and Phoebe's birthday dinner collapses before she abandons it for Mike.

What happens

• In Tulsa, Chandler finds that his whole new team smokes in the office, and he takes a cigarette himself.
• Monica smells the smoke on Chandler the moment he gets home, and he admits he has gone through several cartons in two days.
• Ross pushes a reluctant Rachel out of the apartment so she will go to the dinner, then shuts the door and leaves them both locked out with the sleeping baby inside.
• Monica forbids Chandler to smoke, Chandler lights one in front of her to make a point, and Monica calls a truce so they can have sex on her last fertile day.
• The restaurant refuses to serve Phoebe and Joey until everyone arrives, and Phoebe gives up the big table while Joey is in the bathroom.
• Chandler says he will not sleep with Monica while they are fighting, so Monica apologises for coming down hard on him and they go ahead.
• Afterwards Monica tells Chandler she is still furious and only apologised to get him into bed.
• Ross and Rachel finally turn up more than an hour late, and Phoebe spots that Rachel has brought Emma and Judy along to the bar.
• Phoebe loses her temper at the whole table for being late and not calling, then leaves the dinner herself when Mike finishes work early.
• Everyone else goes home, Joey eats all six dinners alone, and the waiters bring him a birthday cake.
