The One With Chandler's Work Laugh

Thursday, 21 January 1999

Monica meets Chandler's colleagues and comes to dislike the fawning laugh he uses at work, Rachel works out that Monica and Chandler are sleeping together, and Ross spends a few days dating Janice.

What happens

• Ross announces that his ex-wife Emily is getting married again, then flattens his scone on the table.
• At his office party Chandler introduces Monica to his boss Doug, and Monica notices the fake laugh Chandler saves for work.
• At the doubles match Monica refuses to go easy on Doug and Kara, so Chandler deliberately misses shots to hand them the win.
• Monica tells Chandler she cannot stand the sucking-up version of him that comes out around his boss.
• Ross stays out all night and will not explain, and then Janice arrives at the apartment with the scarf he left behind.
• Ross defends the night with Janice as something the two of them have in common, and tells the others he intends to see her again.
• Rachel confronts Monica with the phone call she overheard, and Monica invents a nickname explanation to bury it.
• Chandler finally refuses to laugh at one of Doug's jokes, and Monica rescues him by pretending he simply misunderstood it.
• Rachel catches Monica coming out of Chandler's bedroom, accepts the story that Monica is being paid to clean it, and hugs her in tears.
• Janice ends things with Ross because his complaining has worn her out, which leaves Ross oddly delighted.
