The One With the Kips

Thursday, 29 October 1998

Chandler and Monica take a secret weekend in Atlantic City and have their first fight, while Ross tells Rachel that Emily's condition for saving the marriage is that he stop seeing her.

What happens

• Monica and Chandler admit they are sick of hiding and plan a weekend away under separate cover stories.
• Monica and Chandler each announce a trip to New Jersey at breakfast, and Phoebe remarks on the coincidence.
• Ross tells the others that Emily is coming to New York and that he needs to speak to Rachel first.
• Ross's attempts to explain are derailed by the news that Rachel's childhood dog has died and then by her nosebleed, so his half-finished confession leaves Rachel thinking they have simply agreed not to meet.
• In Atlantic City, Monica makes them change rooms over dirty glasses while Chandler stays fixed on a televised car chase.
• After several more room changes, Monica and Chandler argue about the ruined weekend and he compares her to his mother.
• Ross finally tells Rachel that Emily demanded he stop seeing her and that he already agreed, and Rachel storms out of her own apartment.
• Rachel tells the group she will be pushed out of it the way Chandler's old roommate Kip was after his breakup with Monica.
• Ross comes to Rachel and says that since the choice was his, he should be the one to step away from the group.
• Chandler assumes the fight has ended things, and Monica explains that couples fight and that the two of them are in a relationship.
• Joey works out from a lost eyelash curler that Chandler and Monica are together, and they make him promise to keep it secret.
