The One With the Halloween Party

Thursday, 1 November 2001

Monica throws a costume party where Phoebe meets Ursula's fiancé and exposes the lies Ursula told him, while Ross and Chandler arm wrestle over which of them is stronger and Rachel fails at handing out candy.

What happens

• Monica announces a last-minute Halloween party with mandatory costumes, and Joey refuses to dress up.
• Ursula tells Phoebe she is getting married next week, offers her a place at the wedding, and accepts an invitation to the party.
• Phoebe meets Eric, Ursula's fiancé, a nervous second-grade teacher who mistakes Phoebe for her sister.
• Phoebe praises Eric to Monica, and Monica tells Phoebe she has a crush on her sister's fiancé.
• Eric tells Phoebe he and Ursula met two weeks ago and share a career and a stint abroad, while Ursula silently signals Phoebe to say nothing.
• Joey's speculation about who would win a fight reaches Chandler, Monica names Ross as the stronger of the two, and Mona proposes an arm wrestling match.
• Rachel argues with a boy in a cape who wants money instead of candy, and she keeps telling him to be quiet until he cries.
• Phoebe confronts Ursula in the hallway, and Ursula admits she invented a shared past because Eric enjoyed it.
• Ross admits to Chandler that he needs to look strong in front of Mona, and Chandler deliberately loses the match.
• Phoebe empties Ursula's purse in front of Eric and produces a restaurant nametag and a driver's licence, and Eric accepts that Ursula has been lying to him.
• Rachel pays the crying boy fifty dollars, tells Joey she is hopeless with children, and Joey's attempt to reassure her collapses.
