The One on the Last Night

Thursday, 4 November 1999

On Rachel's last night in the apartment, Monica and Rachel fight instead of packing, while Chandler invents a card game to slip Joey the money he refuses to accept.

What happens

• Chandler hands the bills over to Joey ahead of moving out and offers to cover him for a while, but Joey turns the money down flat.
• Chandler tells Phoebe he wants to get about fifteen hundred dollars to Joey by tricking him into taking it, so that Joey's pride survives.
• Monica discovers Rachel has not packed a thing, and Rachel presents the whole job to her as a parting gift.
• Ross gets out of helping by claiming he has Ben with him, then goes home to build a fake Ben out of a pumpkin.
• Phoebe suggests the women list what they will not miss about each other, and the exercise turns into genuine complaints about phone messages and the phone pen.
• Chandler invents a card game called Cups and makes up rules on the spot so that Joey keeps winning money.
• Rachel starts unpacking and announces she is not moving out, and the argument turns into Monica chasing her around the table.
• Phoebe says she no longer wants to live with Rachel, so Monica sells Rachel as a roommate by listing her kindnesses and breaks down about losing her.
• Joey loses fifteen hundred dollars to Ross at Cups, refuses Chandler's help again, and gives him the big white dog as a goodbye.
• Rachel hands Monica back her key and leaves the apartment for good.
