The One With Phoebe's Uterus

Thursday, 8 January 1998

Phoebe's brother Frank and his new wife Alice ask her to carry their baby, and after a trial run with a puppy she agrees, while Chandler worries about following Joey into Kathy's bed.

What happens

• Frank and Alice tell Phoebe they eloped, then ask her to be the surrogate for the child they cannot conceive themselves.
• Joey turns up in a blazer as a museum tour guide, a job Ross got for him, though Joey has the dinosaur facts wrong.
• Phoebe tells the group she has already decided to do it, and the friends press her to think the pregnancy through first.
• Chandler admits he has been stalling on sleeping with Kathy because Joey dated her first and the walls between their bedrooms are thin.
• Phoebe's birth mother hands her a puppy to keep for three days, arguing that giving up a child is a regret that never lifts.
• Joey discovers the scientists and the guides never share a table, and Ross walks past the seat Joey saved to sit with the white coats.
• Chandler reports that he and Kathy have finally slept together, that it went fine rather than well, and asks Monica for instruction.
• Monica draws Chandler a diagram of seven erogenous zones and talks him through varying the order instead of rushing to one spot.
• Ross throws his lab coat on the cafeteria floor and sits with Joey at a middle table, and other staff start shedding coats and confessing things.
• Phoebe finds she cannot part with the puppy, gives it to Frank and Alice anyway, and seeing their happiness tells them she will carry their baby.
