The One With Joey's Dirty Day

Thursday, 5 February 1998

Joey comes back from a fishing trip too foul-smelling to work alongside Charlton Heston, Rachel hands her opera evening with Emily to Ross so she can chase Joshua, and Ross ends up in Vermont with Emily.

What happens

• Monica urges Joey to stay with Chandler after the Kathy breakup, but Joey leaves for the lake and promises to be back for the strip-club stage of Chandler's recovery.
• At the store, Mr. Waltham asks Rachel to spend the evening with his visiting niece Emily at the opera, and Rachel agrees.
• Joshua then invites Rachel to the opening of a nightclub he has invested in on that same evening, and puts her name on the guest list.
• Joey comes home from three days on the lake smelling appalling, and finds Chandler still in the same chair and the same sweat pants.
• Rachel begs Ross to take Emily to the opera in her place, and Ross gives in after she appeals to how far the two of them have moved on.
• Rachel reports that the club turned her away over a mistaken name on the list, that she never saw Joshua, and that she punched a woman who grabbed her umbrella.
• Ross telephones from a bed and breakfast in Vermont, where he has gone with Emily, and Rachel works out who Emily is.
• Charlton Heston catches Joey using the shower in his dressing room and, after lecturing him about actors and self-doubt, orders him never to do it again.
• At the strip club Chandler reaches his third stage only once Monica, Rachel and Phoebe start describing which dancers they found attractive.
• Ross returns from Vermont and thanks Rachel for Emily, and the two of them trade harder and harder punches while each insists on being pleased for the other.
