The One With Joey's New Girlfriend

Thursday, 30 October 1997

Chandler falls for Kathy, the woman Joey has started dating, and hides it badly, while Ross discovers his evening with Amanda is a babysitting job and Rachel takes up with a college student who robs her.

What happens

• Chandler works up the nerve to introduce himself to a woman at the coffee house, and Joey walks in and kisses her, revealing that Kathy is his date.
• Chandler and Kathy both get up in the middle of the night for the same television programme and spend it laughing together in his living room.
• Phoebe's cold leaves her singing voice husky, and she decides she sounds better and sexier than she ever has.
• Rachel brings home a college soccer player named Josh, kisses him in front of Ross, and praises him for everything Ross is not.
• Ross arrives at Amanda's flat expecting a romantic evening and learns that she has hired him to watch her son while she goes out with another man.
• Chandler tells Monica, Ross and Phoebe that he is in love with Joey's girlfriend and cannot stop thinking about her.
• Joey reads Chandler's avoidance as dislike of Kathy and makes him come to dinner with them to make an effort.
• At the restaurant Chandler pours out everything he feels for Kathy to Joey, framing it as an example of what he could say, and Joey hears it as him faking enthusiasm.
• Monica loses patience and tells Ross he is a babysitter, mocks Rachel for a boyfriend who steals from her, and points out that the ring Josh bought Rachel belongs to Monica.
• Phoebe's cold clears and her voice goes back to normal, so she kisses Gunther to catch his.
