The One With Joey's New Brain

Thursday, 15 February 2001

Joey learns his comatose soap character will wake up carrying Jessica Lockhart's transplanted brain, so he gets coaching from the actress being written out and ends up sleeping with her, while Phoebe and Rachel fight over a stranger's forgotten phone.

What happens

• Joey tells the others that his soap character is coming out of his coma and will receive the brain of a female character the writers are killing off.
• Phoebe and Rachel spot an attractive man in the coffee house who leaves his cell phone behind, and each of them wants to be the one who returns it.
• Monica and Chandler track a terrible noise to a window across the street and realise Ross is learning the bagpipes for their wedding.
• Phoebe takes the phone out of Rachel's purse, answers the owner's call herself and arranges for him to collect it at her apartment.
• Cecilia confirms to Joey that she really is being written out, and she agrees to teach him how to play Jessica.
• Monica and Chandler forbid the bagpipes at their wedding, and Ross persuades them to sit through one real performance before they decide.
• The coaching session turns romantic when Cecilia demonstrates a stage kiss on Joey and pulls him down onto the couch.
• The man who turns up for the phone is the owner's boss, and Rachel hands him to Phoebe in return for a favour owed.
• Ross performs his bagpipe version of a party song for Monica and Chandler, who refuse it anyway.
• Joey shoots his first scene as Jessica, and Cecilia praises his work before telling him she has taken an eight-month film job in Mexico.
