The One With the Engagement Picture

Chandler cannot smile for the engagement photograph, Rachel meddles in her assistant's social life to protect her own crush, and Phoebe and Ross date a divorcing couple who then reconcile.

What happens

• Phoebe tells the others that the coffeehouse regular has asked her out, and admits he is married but in the middle of a divorce.
• Rachel confesses she has a crush on her new assistant Tag and insists she will never act on it, then reacts badly to the idea of him seeing someone else.
• Rachel asks Joey to take Tag out for an evening so the young man will have a friend in the city, and Joey agrees.
• Monica loses her temper at the photographer for laughing at Chandler, defends him, and the affection makes him smile long enough for a picture.
• Phoebe hands Ross her ballroom dancing tickets to distract Kyle's ex-wife Whitney, and the next morning Ross has Whitney at his apartment for breakfast.
• Phoebe repeats Kyle's warnings that Whitney is difficult and controlling, and Ross dismisses them as an ex-husband's bias.
• Tag comes to work bragging that Joey helped him collect twenty phone numbers, so Rachel bribes Joey with ten shirts to talk Tag out of chasing women.
• Tag tells Rachel he is done with bars and wants a relationship, then reveals he means reuniting with his ex-girlfriend, which Rachel misreads as interest in her.
• Kyle and Whitney turn up together to say they are reconciling, dumping Phoebe and Ross, who agree they are better off.
• The published announcement shows Monica posing with Joey rather than Chandler, and both of them like how they look together.
